What does being Afro Latina mean to you?
A not commonly used term, classified on the Census as Black Hispanics. On Wikipedia “Afro-Latin” translates to “Latin American people of African ancestry.” Yet that does not give ME! a clear definition of who I am and what it means to me.
Afro-Latin stands for culture, diversity and a shared cultural experience deriving from a beautiful community. A community diverse and rich, yet faced with a constant adversary. Faced with choices many of us don’t know the answer to “Are you Hispanic, or Black?” criticizing remarks from our own “Straighten your hair, you look too…black?” “supportive” comments, though seemingly lacking support. “ I have lightning cream if you need it!” These comments and concerns couldn’t stray further from what it means to me!
To be Afro-Latina. Embracing the kinks, coils curves. Basking in the melanin and rejoicing in the fruit of my people. The future of Que Viva La Negra must depend on those who understand what it means to appreciate what you stand for and where you come from. Willing to celebrate the achievements and shared cultural experiences of the Afro-Latin community.
As an Afro-Latina raised in the Dominican Republic, colorism and racism don’t stray too far, I was criticized for my every move, and it pains me to see the cycle continue. With time I finally learned what it means to be more, to live more, and to exist as more.
Allow me to share my experiences and insight with the “Que Viva La Negra” brand.
I have admired the work it takes to follow your dreams and help others do the same.
